The name comes from being the place with the most rain in Tamil Nadu. It rains a lot from June to November, followed by winter for two months. When the British arrived, people were not treated well. In 1850, Bamboo, Teak, Sandalwood, and many trees were cut down. It was surprising that the British had established the Ramasamy Mudaliyar coffee estate before their official arrival in 1846. In the 18th century, people were farming independently before the British arrived. The indigenous people lived a natural life.

The forest was cleared with the help of the indigenous people, and the tea garden was established. Karval Mass built the roads. Before the roads were built, tea was transported using a rope-way. Karval Mass took Prince Wales hunting. A railway station was built in Pothanur (Coimbatore) for Prince Wales’ visit, which was later canceled. The Railway Station and roads are still in use today.

Valparai has a total population of 50,000 to 60,000 people. Over 25,000 people work in the tea estates. There are 38,400 tea gardens in Valparai. In 1865, people from other areas were brought together to work.
